Maintaining optimal oral health is essential for your overall well-being. Dental care can be overwhelming, from regular checkups to understanding gum diseases and their treatments.

Yonge Eglinton Periodontics wants to arm you with the most accurate information available, and to do this, we’ve answered some of the most frequently asked questions about dental care.

1. How do I know if I have gum disease, and when should I see a Periodontist?

Gum disease is most often a “silent disease,” meaning it could progress without much awareness. Some signs of gum disease are bleeding gums, a bad taste or smell, and cold sensitivity. Signs that the disease has progressed are loose teeth. It is a good idea to see a periodontist if you have any of the above or if your dentist is concerned about gum health. Seeing a periodontist does not mean that there is an immediate need for treatment, but it is helpful to monitor progression and to be able to intervene before it is too late.

2. Are implants costly?

Implants are considered the gold standard for tooth replacement. There are only three ways to replace missing teeth: Implants, fixed bridges, or removable dentures. Among the many advantages of implants is that replacing the lost or hopeless tooth does not rely on other teeth. They could be an investment, but they come with the highest long-term predictability of all the options. And they may not be as expensive as you think. The cost will depend on how many implants, the preparation that may be required with the bone, and the complexity.

3. I have no pain, so why should I see a periodontist, and why have gum treatment for something that does not hurt?

Like many diseases (some cancers, and high blood pressure, for example), there can be no pain until the late stage. The disease can often be controlled the earlier it is treated. This may include some tips on oral hygiene, more frequent professional cleanings, or even medications to help prevent the progression. Or, there may be a need for gum procedures to be done by a periodontist.
